Can it check services that are not public?

Not from our checkers. They run on the public internet and refuse private and internal addresses. A job inside your network can still report in through a heartbeat, as long as it can make an outgoing HTTPS request.

What can a JSON field check look at?

A field in the response body and the value it should have. The check fails when the value is wrong, like any other failure. Custom request headers, such as an auth token, are set in the dashboard. Both are on every paid plan.

How does a heartbeat know a job failed?

The job pings its URL when it finishes. If no ping arrives within the period plus its grace time, or the job pings to say it failed, the heartbeat goes down and alerts like a monitor.

Do we pay per engineer?

No. Every plan is a flat price per team. Starter includes 5 team members, and Pro and Business have no limit.

Can we manage monitors from code?

Paid plans include the JSON API with tokens limited to one team, with separate read and write permissions. Outgoing webhooks are signed, so you can verify them on your side too.
